Abstract

This qualitative study examines the institutionalization of the Tasmi’ method (a structured recitation test) at the Miftahul 'Ula Islamic Boarding School in East Java, Indonesia, as a strategic response  to  the  challenges  of  maintaining  tradition  within  a modern educational context. The research aims to analyze how this traditional Qur'anic memorization practice is formalized into a  standardized,  rule-based  system  within  a  contemporary pesantren. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the  school's  leadership  and  teaching  staff,  participatory observation  of  Tasmi’ activities,  and  document  analysis.  The findings reveal that the institutionalization process involves the codification of procedures (e.g., standardized error limits, formal schedules, and certification for 5-juz recitations), which serves to bridge  traditional  oral  learning  with  modern  demands  for measurable  quality  and  accountability.  This  formalization enhances  the  quality  control  of  memorization  while simultaneously preserving the core of the sanad-based (chain of transmission)  tradition.  The  study  concludes  that  the institutionalization of Tasmi’ represents a dynamic synthesis of tradition and modernity, allowing the pesantren to maintain its religious authority and pedagogical integrity while adapting its operational mechanisms to contemporary standards. This offers a  replicable  model  for  other  Islamic  educational  institutions navigating similar pressures
